Sjögren's Syndrome

An autoimmune disorder characterized by dryness of the mucous membranes (Sicca Syndrome). It primarily attacks the lacrimal (tear) and salivary glands but can affect the kidneys, lungs, and joints. 90% of cases occur in women over 40.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

  • Dry mouth (Xerostomia): Difficulty speaking and swallowing dry food.
  • Dry eyes (Xerophthalmia): A sensation of “sand under the eyelids,” fatigue, and light sensitivity. This can lead to corneal ulcers. Tested via the Schirmer test.
  • Diagnosis: Confirmed by detecting SSA and SSB antibodies or a minor salivary gland biopsy.
  • Primary vs. Secondary: It can occur alone (Primary) or alongside other diseases like RA or SLE (Secondary).
