An autoimmune disorder characterized by dryness of the mucous membranes (Sicca Syndrome). It primarily attacks the lacrimal (tear) and salivary glands but can affect the kidneys, lungs, and joints. 90% of cases occur in women over 40.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Dry mouth (Xerostomia): Difficulty speaking and swallowing dry food.
Dry eyes (Xerophthalmia): A sensation of “sand under the eyelids,” fatigue, and light sensitivity. This can lead to corneal ulcers. Tested via the Schirmer test.
Diagnosis: Confirmed by detecting SSA and SSB antibodies or a minor salivary gland biopsy.
Primary vs. Secondary: It can occur alone (Primary) or alongside other diseases like RA or SLE (Secondary).
